Abstract

The emergence of CRISPR-Cas systems has revolutionized biomedical research, offering new possibilities for addressing complex diseases such as periodontal disease. This multifactorial condition arises from a combination of microbial dysbiosis and dysregulated host immune responses, resulting in chronic inflammation that can progress to tooth loss if left untreated. CRISPR technology can tackle these root causes by precisely targeting pathogenic microbes and modulating host immune pathways. The incorporation of CRISPR-Cas systems into precision periodontal therapy not only opens the door to highly personalized treatment strategies but also triggers important discussions about the ethical considerations and technical challenges of gene editing. This review study assessed the effect of CRISPR-Cas systems in the pathogenesis of periodontal disease, evaluate their therapeutic potential, and evaluate their implications for future clinical applications.
